MEMBAKUT: The contractor of the Membakut Public Library here has been told to put extra effort in order to meet the deadline for the RM2 million project.
Community Development and Consumer Affairs Assistant Minister, Herbert Timbon Lagadan, who visited the project site with Membakut Assemblyman Mohd Arifin Arif, was upset with the contractor for the slow work.
"This site was acquired since September 2007, and the library is set for completion on March 10, 2009, but only seven per cent of work is completed now.
"We want the contractor to shape up and really get things moving É I would like to see the foundation completed in one month," he said, in a statement, Wednesday.
He said now that the cement had been replaced with bakau and belian, there was no excuse the project could not progress, adding he was told the reason for the delay was the unavailability of sulphate-resistant cement.
Meanwhile, Beaufort District Engineer, Ku Chau Pin pointed out to Herbert and Mohd Arifin that the most difficult part is laying the foundation, as there was water beneath the site.
Nevertheless, Ku was confident the project could be completed soon if the good weather prevails for the next few months.
It was learnt the Public Works Department had served the contractor at least three warning letters for the delay.
State Library Director Wong Vui Yin and his deputy Joanna Kitingan, among others.
